Introducing our Future Leaders Programme

Future Leaders

The Bay of Plenty Education Trust’s Future Leaders Programme has been specifically created to help secondary school students who have the determination to develop as a leader and will commit to develop their leadership skills.

It is designed to complement the Trust’s Scholarships, which are awarded annually by the Trust to Year 13 students in the Coastal Bay of Plenty area on the recommendation of school Principals.

The course is quality-driven, providing a selected group of students with a unique opportunity for self-discovery and development.

Programme Objectives

The objectives of the programme are to:

  • Teach participants how to improve their leadership effectiveness.

  • Help participants develop and better utilise their potential when relating to and interacting with others.

  • Inspire and motivate participants to take on leadership roles within their respective schools and communities.

  • Connect participants with like-minded peers from other schools.

Programme Overview

The Future Leaders Programme is unique.

It has been developed specifically for the Bay of Plenty Education Trust, to assist students to develop and hone their leadership skills over a period of two years during their Years 12 and 13 at secondary school.

During this period, the select group will receive instruction, guidance and personal coaching from experienced, professional coaches/facilitators in the art of leadership, focusing upon five practices common to most exemplary leadership achievements.

Programme Benefits

The domain of leaders is the future.

The most significant contribution leaders make is to the long-term development of people and institutions so that they can adapt, change, prosper and grow.

Leadership is important in every sector, in every community, and in every country. We need more exemplary leaders, and we need them more than ever.

This programme is designed to contribute to the revitalisation of organisations, to the creation of new enterprises, the renewal of healthy communities, and to greater respect and understanding in the world.

Leadership development is ultimately self-development, and consequently the Future Leaders Programme will benefit the students by helping them to:

  • Understand how people learn to lead.

  • Integrate the best leadership learning practices into their personal development.

  • Consciously review their progress toward becoming a better leader.

  • Select the kinds of development activities that best fit their needs.

  • Write a personal plan for the next steps in their leadership development.

  • Apply their learning to real-life leadership challenges.

Programme Features

  1. Participation in the programme is estimated to cost $2,000 per participant and is fully funded by the Bay of Plenty Education Trust.

  2. The maximum enrolment is a maximum of 20 participants per annum, who must currently attend secondary school in the Coastal Bay of Plenty.

  3. Target participants will initially be Year 12 students not currently in formal leadership roles at school, but who have demonstrated the potential to become successful leaders, and who can be expected to respond favourably, and show strong commitment to the programme.

  4. Nomination for enrolment in the programme is limited to no more than two students per secondary school/college, and will be made by each school’s Year 12 Dean (or equivalent).

  5. Participants will attend a total of four one-day 'Foundations of Leadership" workshops throughout the Programme, typically in March and August of each of the two years.  These will be run in either Tauranga or Whakatane.

  6. Participants are expected to apply their leadership skills in an acceptable 'practice' situation (eg a club or organisation, usually in the school that they attend) for at least 3-4 months and to report back on their experience during Workshop 4.

  7. John Adair's Action-Centred Leadership model (represented by his 'three circles' diagram'), illustrates three core leadership responsibilities
    1. Achieving the task
    2. Building the team
    3. Developing individuals
    4. Kouzes and Posner's Five Leadership Practices model

Kouzes and Posner created their Five Leadership Practices model after researching people's personal experiences of excellent leadership. These practices are part of a recognised package that approaches leadership as a measurable, learnable and teachable set of behaviours. The package includes a ‘Self’ and a 360-degree leadership assessment tool that helps students measure their leadership competencies and guides them through the process of applying the five practices to real-life challenges.

The Five Leadership Practices are:

  1. Model the Way

  2. Inspire a Shared Vision

  3. Challenge the Process

  4. Enable Others to Act

  5. Encourage the Heart
